World Soda Ash Conference: Capacity Still Constraining Prices

Soda ash plant operating rates in China will drop to 60% if all soda ash capacity additions go ahead there by 2012 as announced, says Roger Pechey, senior analyst at Harriman Chemsult (London). Speaking at the World Soda Ash Conference 2010, currently taking place in London and co-organized by Harriman Chemsult and Chemical Week, Pechey said that "clearly 40% overcapacity in China will not happen, but the questions is: how will the market correction take place?” Chinese producers are supplying export markets at low prices, incurring effective negative margins, he says.

NORTH AMERICA
Chlor-Alkali: A Canexus force majeure announcement last week has affected supply patterns for caustic soda, chlorine and hydrochloric acid.
Vinyl: EDC activity remains limited.
EUROPE
Chlor-Alkali: Suppliers perceive availability as limited, while most regular customers are able to source adequate quantities.
Vinyl: EDC is under pressure, particularly in the export market, where the impact is being partly offset by the weak Euro.
ASIA
Chlor-Alkali: The downward pressure on caustic soda pricing persists across the major Asian markets due to weak overall demand.
Vinyl: The gap between EDC bids and offers has widened further.
